The Lake Sonoma 50 Mile was the usual John Medinger first class event with a big, talented field, a stunning course, excellent support, and perfect weather for an ultra, that is, overcast, cool, breezy, and rainy. There were three wet creek crossings this year, a nice break from pounding the trail, and some mud but really nothing that was going to slow you down. The aid stations were alive with stellar volunteers and the grilled cheese sandwiches on the return trip were worth the price of admission right there. The swag included a standard, tech fabric, white, sensible short-sleeved T-shirt and a kickass finisher’s jacket that is going to be the envy of all who did not attend this year. Tough luck. And finally the pulled pork sliders, craft beer, and gourmet tamales at the finish were over the top. The front runners were awesome and the beauty of this race is that the out and back format let’s everybody have a look at how the real runners are doing, although there is a loop at the far end of the course that conceals a little bit of the field just in front and behind you to create some drama.Enjoy the pics. My camera crapped out on me early, though, so you are only seeing about half the course on the way out.
